GROWING HEALTHY SUSTAINABLE FOOD FOR THE NORTHUMBERLAND, DURHAM & SCARBOROUGH COMMUNITIES

Meet Farmer Glen

Raising a family changed my perspective on the future they would grow up in.

I only ever wanted 2 kids, but my wife Amy’s wish to try for a girl after 2 boys was not the kind of decision you can talk your partner out of - so we welcomed our youngest girl in 2016. Something shifted in me then, thinking about the future we were building for our 3 children.

I realized how much we are taking our planet for granted and creating a more challenging world for them to inherit. I read everything I could about climate change and when I learned of the environmental benefits of regenerative agriculture, it awakened a seed planted deep in me as a child.

I decided to become an organic farmer so I could make a difference. I want to teach my children where our food comes from and cultivate their palates to value wholesome, nutritious foods. I want to help build a better future - for my family & for our planet.

Finding the perfect farm was a challenge, but with the support of our friends Adrian & Christie joining us as partners, we found home on a beautiful 105-acre farm in in the rolling Northumberland Hills northwest of Port Hope.

Our farm features 35 acres of Ganaraska forest with a stunning spring-fed creek of crystal-clear waters - the inspiration for the name 'Cold Springs Organics'. The area’s rich history and incredible neighbours remind me of the community where I grew up in Kakabeka Falls, near Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Our 1.5 acre market garden where we grow your food gave us our first harvest in 2021, and enables us to share the story of our food with more people in our community every year. The farm has become a very special place to our family & friends, and we are so excited to keep growing & sharing it with you.

Thank you for supporting us on this journey.

Your Farmer,
Glen

Our Farming Methods

Our farm goes beyond just organic produce - we enrich the soil, protect the landscape, and create resilient ecosystems. We’re farming for a healthier planet & a brighter future.

Proudly Certified Organic

Certified organic means you can trust your food is grown with organic seeds & organic amendments, in organic soil with organic methods. We grow healthy & nutritious chemical-free food without synthetic fertilizers by rotating crops to maintain soil fertility & health. This fosters a balanced ecosystem so we can rely on natural predators for pest control instead of synthetic pesticides, reducing chemical runoff into our community’s waterways. We are certified by CSI for the Canadian Organic Standards (COR)

Permaculture Principles

Permaculture design mimics self-sustaining ecosystems in nature by holistically integrating crop, water, and wildlife management to build resilience & adaptability for the long-term health of our land. We use companion planting with large flowering hedgerows to provide food & shelter for our pollinating friends and increase biodiversity in our soil. We prioritize resource recycling with swales, known as the lungs of a garden, to capture rainfall and help it infiltrate the soil.

Regenerative Agriculture

Our regenerative agriculture methods restore & strengthen our soil health and the ecosystem it supports. By using low-till methods & cover crops we protect the soil surface and reduce erosion, which helps capture carbon dioxide to mitigate climate change. We annually test our soil & optimize our strategies in our quest for world-class soil quality, and to create a thriving oasis for our farm’s flora - we're big fans of our helpful birds & earthworms!

Threatened Species

Preserving native biodiversity is crucial for maintaining balanced ecosystems that support food web integrity and provide pollination, water purification, and climate regulation. We share our land with many threatened bird species so we create safe spaces for them around the farm, including birdhouses for our eastern bluebirds, hay pastures for our eastern meadowlarks & bobolinks, and an open barn with mud puddles for our barn swallows.

"I strive to be a steward for the land, building carbon-rich soils elbow-deep in thriving organic matter, and reconnect my community with Mother Nature for the health of body, mind & spirit."

- Farmer Glen Young
